Can You Find Out Baby's Gender at 13 Weeks? Early Gender Ultrasound FAQ

Expectant couple laughing as multicolored confetti bursts around them at a backyard gender reveal with family

Yes, you can find out your baby’s gender at 13 weeks with an elective ultrasound. At Perfect Preview 3D in Williamsville, NY, our Early Gender Determination visit is available from 13 weeks on. It costs $99 plus tax, takes about 10 to 15 minutes, and our gender determination accuracy is guaranteed.

We’ve been helping Western New York families since 2011, and “How early can we find out?” is still one of the questions we hear most. Below are straight answers about what happens at the visit, what you take home, and how to turn the news into a reveal your family will remember.

How early can you find out the gender with an elective ultrasound?

At our studio, you can book an early gender ultrasound starting at 13 weeks. Many parents don’t learn the sex at their medical appointments until the mid-pregnancy anatomy scan, which is usually around 18 to 22 weeks. So an elective visit can mean finding out several weeks sooner.

Some families also learn the sex earlier through a prenatal blood screening ordered by their provider. That’s a medical test, and whether it’s offered is a conversation for you and your provider. Our visit is different. It’s a chance to see your baby on screen, hear the heartbeat and share the moment with the people you love.

Is 13 weeks too early?

Thirteen weeks is our starting point for gender determination. Some parents prefer to wait a little longer, and that’s completely fine. Our Early Gender Determination visit is open to anyone 13 weeks or further along, so you can choose the week that feels right for you.

What’s included in the Early Gender Determination visit?

Here’s exactly what you get with the Early Gender Determination package:

  • Gender determination, with accuracy guaranteed
  • A chance to listen to your baby’s heartbeat and have it measured
  • 2 printed 4×6 photos
  • Digital pictures
  • Digital video set to music
  • $20 off a future 3D/4D/HD visit
  • Formula coupons and samples

The appointment takes about 10 to 15 minutes. That’s plenty of time for a focused gender visit, and it’s easy to fit into a lunch break or a Saturday morning.

Can I add anything extra?

Yes. Popular add-ons include a Heartbeat Animal ($39.95 plus tax), a heartbeat recorder with your baby’s heartbeat ($19.99 plus tax), an 8K Enhancement Photo ($24.95 plus tax) and extra 4×6 photos ($5.00 each plus tax). You’ll find the full list on our packages and pricing page.

How accurate is an early gender ultrasound at 13 weeks?

Our gender determination accuracy is guaranteed. Parents trust us with one of the biggest announcements of their pregnancy, and we take that seriously.

In general, it’s easier to see on ultrasound as a baby grows, and a baby’s position can affect how clear the view is on any given day. If you’d like to know the details of how the guarantee works for your situation, call us at (716) 632-2229 before your visit. We’re happy to walk you through it.

Can the gender be sealed in an envelope for a reveal?

Absolutely. If you want to be surprised along with everyone else, just tell us at the start of your appointment. We’ll keep the screen and conversation gender-neutral and seal the result in an envelope for you.

Hand that envelope to your baker, party planner, best friend or grandma-to-be, and let them handle the surprise. Lots of families also open it together right after the visit, in the car or at home.

What are some gender reveal ideas with confetti or smoke?

Besides the sealed envelope, we also offer confetti and smoke options as part of our gender reveal services. Ask us about these when you book so we can help you plan. A few ways families use them:

  • Confetti: A burst of color at a backyard get-together or family dinner, usually caught on video.
  • Smoke: A dramatic outdoor moment that photographs beautifully, especially with a crowd.
  • Sealed envelope: The most flexible option. Use it for a cake, balloon box, pinata or a quiet moment just for the two of you.

Whatever you pick, make sure someone’s ready to film. The reactions are often the best part.

Who can come to an early gender ultrasound?

This is a family moment, so bring your people. We comfortably fit 8 to 10 guests, and there are no age restrictions for children. Big siblings are welcome.

We schedule only one family at a time. That means the studio is private while you’re here, without strangers in the waiting area while you celebrate.

How do I prepare for my appointment?

Preparation is simple:

  1. Hydrate well for 3 to 5 days beforehand. Good hydration helps with image quality.
  2. No full bladder needed. Drink normally on the day of your visit.
  3. Be under prenatal care. You must already be receiving prenatal care and have had a medical diagnostic ultrasound before your elective visit.
  4. Plan your reveal. Decide ahead of time whether you want to find out in the room or get a sealed envelope.

Does insurance cover it?

Insurance doesn’t cover elective ultrasounds. We accept cash, Visa, MasterCard, debit and HSA cards.

Is an elective gender ultrasound the same as a medical ultrasound?

No. Perfect Preview 3D is an elective, non-diagnostic studio. Our visits are about bonding, keepsakes and celebration. They don’t check your baby’s health or development and don’t replace any scan your provider orders.

Think of our visit as something that adds to your prenatal care, not a substitute for it. Keep every appointment your provider recommends, and bring any health questions to them.

How does the Early Gender visit fit with Watch Me Grow?
